A slate table comes apart into a frame, a bed in sections and a set of rails, and the largest of those pieces has to fit through every opening between the street and the room. In a lot of this city that is the whole story. A shotgun house is one room wide, so a bed section travels the length of the building through a series of internal doorways, and any one of them can be the narrowest point. The Victorians are taller and no wider, with a straight steep flight and a turn at the top that was designed around furniture nobody makes any more.

The measurement that matters is not the room, it is the tightest opening on the way to it. A three piece bed gives you options because the sections are smaller. A one piece slate gives you none, and in these houses that is frequently the end of the conversation.

Basements are common and useful, and near the river they run damp. Slate does not mind. Frame timber and cloth do, so it is worth saying if the room has a dehumidifier working hard in it.
